4361 third entry. Mrs. Teacher

https://youtu.be/pkWbcj6x7uA

I interviewed an ELL teacher that I have worked a little with at a school.  She went into great detail about the benefits of knowing Spanish and how it has helped her effectively teach her students subject content and English.  She teaches math and has found that many ESL students struggle with math terms and concepts when they cannot first be told what they mean in Spanish.  She brought up an interesting way that she teaches terms where she tries to use similar sounding words in both English and Spanish.  This allows her to better understand what words ESL students are trying to say when they are struggling to properly say an English word.  The teacher also stated that Bilingual students  that speak English as a second language are much more comfortable in the classroom and are much more willing to misbehave during class.  With that being the case she stated that it is more difficult to teach monolingual students because she has to show them the information in Spanish and then English.  When it comes to motivating monolingual students she stated that her growing up in Mexico allows her to relate with the students and allows her to use her own life story to motivate ESL students.  She helps them understand that it is difficult to move to a new country that has a different major language than they are used to, but that they can all learn English if they put in the effort.  She noted that one of the best motivators for her students is for her to show them their progression throughout the year with learning English.  Sometimes they don't realize how much they improve and being shown the improvement can give them extra motivation.

  1. That's really awesome that your teacher teaches in both English and Spanish! That must be so challenging for her! I try to do something similar in my classroom! I'm allowed a tiny little space in the back that I like to put words that some students who are ELLs struggle with! I think to myself, if they struggled with that word, then surely another student will as well! Something else that I do, is that I try to make looking up what the word means into a game. I tell them that it's a treasure hunt and that the first one who finds the meaning of it and uses it correctly in a sentence gets 10 extra points on an assignment. It motivates them and it also helps them practice new words.
